This is the Yagike mansion, known as the birthplace of the Shinsengumi. On March 16th, 1863, during the time of Yagi Gennojo, a doorplate with the inscription “Headquarters of the Shinsengumi in the Domain of Matsudaira Hinogokami” was installed on the right gatepost of Yagike, and the Shinsengumi was born. The inner parlor is also famous as the place where Serizawa Kamo was assassinated. Surprisingly, there are still sword marks left behind from that time.A Japanese sweet shop called Kyoto Tsuruya Kakujuan is currently in business inside Yagike, so you can enjoy matcha and a sweet called chutonbei with a guide for ¥1000. However, please note that photography is generally not allowed inside the mansion.
